Directional strength — each planet is strongest when positioned in a specific house (direction) in the birth chart.
Dig Bala (dig = direction, bala = strength) is one of the six components of Shadbala — the directional strength a planet gains based on which house it occupies. Each of the nine Vedic planets has a house where it achieves maximum Dig Bala: Jupiter and Mercury are strongest in the 1st house (East, Lagna); the Sun and Mars are strongest in the 10th house (South, Midheaven); Saturn is strongest in the 7th house (West, Descendant); and the Moon and Venus are strongest in the 4th house (North, Nadir). A planet in its Dig Bala house gains significant additional strength regardless of other conditions. The directional assignments correspond to the cardinal directions — Lagna (East), 10th house (South), 7th house (West), 4th house (North) — and reflect the cardinal directions in the traditional Vedic chart orientation. Dig Bala is particularly important for functional results: a planet with high Dig Bala can give strong results in the life area it signifies.
Dig Bala is directional strength — a component of Shadbala. Each planet has one house where it achieves maximum strength by direction: Jupiter/Mercury in the 1st house, Sun/Mars in the 10th house, Saturn in the 7th house, Moon/Venus in the 4th house. A planet with high Dig Bala is potent in delivering results for the life areas it rules.
