What is Vimshottari dasha?

It is the most widely used planetary-timing system in Vedic astrology — a 120-year cycle that gives each of nine planets a fixed span to rule your life in turn, starting from the planet that rules your birth nakshatra.

Why does it start mid-period for me?

You are rarely born at the start of a planet's dasha. The 'balance' is how much of that first period remained at birth — we compute it from how far through your birth nakshatra the Moon had travelled.

Do I need my exact birth time?

Yes, ideally. The dasha is anchored to your Moon's nakshatra, which moves about one nakshatra every day — so an accurate time of birth gives accurate period dates.

What are antar-dashas?

Sub-periods. Each maha-dasha divides into nine antar-dashas (and those further still), so a 'Jupiter year' has a Saturn sub-period, a Mercury sub-period, and so on — each colouring that stretch.
